Horrifying But Real Story Out Of Knoxville

The government is beginning to make me wonder if all those years my grandfather hid money in old jackets that were in the back of the closet wasn’t a bad idea.

This is terrifying.

Today the IRS chose to empty one of my bank accounts. Any funds I put in that account go straight to Uncle Sam. I apologize to anyone whose checks bounce (Knox County Schools) because of this but I have no control over my government that is so desperate to fund an illegal war that it is willing to starve a 7 person household and threaten to put them on the streets. And all of this over not filing taxes for one year that I didn’t make any money and another year that I barely made enough money to sustain myself.

For the record, they overdrew my account by $102 dollars.

I know best wishes to the McCaughan family won’t help, but I do want them to know that I’m glad they shared this story.

The government really doesn’t care about the little guy, does it. Feeding one’s family isn’t important? This is outrageous. Couldn’t they have tried to work something out.

Kids need milk, dammit.

A really interesting old woman who had lived there all of her life called me one night and said, “I hear that you’re having an affair.” I assured her that wasn’t true and she replied – and this is pretty close to verbatim – “Oh. I’m disappointed to hear that. I thought that if you could have all of those children, run for city council AND have an affair, you have the energy we need on the council.”

The elder isn’t KAG. It’s her mom. Yeah, I’m older than KAG. I guess I’m her elder. Well, not in brain cells but you get the point.

Two Steps Forward, Five Steps Back

R. Neal reports this bit of interesting economic news.

In the morning-after glow of the news that VW will bring 2000 jobs to Chattanooga (at an estimated taxpayer cost of $500 million that we know about), Nissan has announced they are cutting 6,000 jobs in the state.

I can’t recall, how much did taxpayers pony up to get those Nissan plants here?

Sigh.

Teach Your Children Well

I’ve been reading quite a bit about the Knoxville shootings. Two people dead, hundreds of people seeing a man give his life to save theirs, a day where children woke up, excited to be in a musical in front of their friends, their family and their fellowship.

For the people in the church, for those people burying their dead, this isn’t a political issue. It’s an issue of grief and loss. Of the real horrors in this world where a madman walks into a church and starts shooting. The reality that nothing makes sense.

And then I read this passage from Michael Silence this morning and if I lived in Knoxville, I’d like to just sit at the end of this desk and offer silent support because no truer words have been written.

Show the world Knoxville will unite and progress together and not fall into the black hole of hate. Please, let’s see some strong, firm, united and resolute leadership on this. Keep moving forward, because if you are not, you’re going backwards. The time is now, this morning, this minute, for leadership by example. Give our teachers a direction to point our children toward. Now!

When I was 13-years-old, a girl’s body was found, raped and mutilated in the woods here in Hooterville. Her name was Cary Ann Medlin and her murderer, Robert Glen Coe, was the first man put to death in this state in recent history after years of sitting on death row. As an adult, I covered his hearings and saw the emptiness in him. The darkness was so black that not only did my skin crawl but I had to make myself keep looking at him. He not only took a child’s life but he took the innocence of this area away from us. We no longer rode bikes all over town. We didn’t wander the streets like we did before Medlin’s death. He took so much.

After he raped her, 8-years-old, Medlin told her “Jesus Loves You.” He stabbed her in the throat. As a reporter, years after her murder, I saw the pictures. I can’t unsee them, you know.

When I heard of the shootings, I thought of Coe. I thought of the families who will all be scarred by this. I thought of Medlin’s family and of the Coes.

I thought of the shock that Knoxville is going through right now.

I thought of the loss.

This isn’t a political issue to me. This is about how in the blink of an eye the world can change. And how it affects everyone. Stew was the biggest liberal you’d ever meet. Not one of us thought of his politics when he died.

The story by Granju hit me the hardest. Adkisson is a madman. His “excuse” of shooting up a church most likely has as much to do with his ex-wife being an ex-parishioner than anything else.

We need to let these people heal. All of these people from the family to the city of Knoxville.

Another Hate Crime

In a 10 a.m. press conference I just watched, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said Jim D. Adkisson singled out the church for its support of “liberal” and “gay” issues. Owen said the quick action by some church members to stop Adkisson likely saved lives. He said it was clear Adkisson planned to use the additional ammunition he had. He also expected to be killed by police, Owen said.

When I lived in Nashville I went to the Unitarian Church.

My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Knoxville.

• Women’s Health News: I don’t care about legal status – I think it’s better for all women, legal immigrants or not, to receive prenatal care than not to – at least to have the option. This event sends a message to the community of immigrant women that there will be no discretion, no compassion, that they risk being jailed, giving birth in custody, and having their baby taken away if they take the simple step of seeking medical care while pregnant.

‘Can’t Be Allowed To Go By Without Comment’

Jon says it better than I can about Barack Obama shift to the middle.

Anyway, it’s not yet enough to lose my vote. But it can’t be allowed to go by without comment. He has to take the lumps he’s asked for. “My Candidate, Right or Wrong” is how the last regime worked — no thanks.

There are people watching. They aren’t going to agree with everything that Obama does and, at least right now, we have the right to say it out loud when we don’t agree.

It’s good to have a dialog. We live in some odd times. But so did my parents and my grandparents, I guess.

But if we don’t talk about it, then we are lemmings.

And we’ve had eight years of that mentality.

The Voices In Your Head

I’ve read a few posts lately, where people are asking their lurkers to unmask, comment, and I’m kind of puzzled as to why?  Why do you need to know who’s looking at you?  Are you worried about stalkers?  Well, if so, then I guess I’d have to tell you that you probably should have thought about that issue before you started blogging.  You know, before you threw your life out there on the intarwebz, for all the world to see.  It’s really the equivalent of allowing random strangers to come into your house and root through your undie drawer, in a mental way.  You know that, right?

Missy goes on to write about her perspective on how blogging opens up the world and how she welcomes everyone. That they read her posts and then they move on. That’s true. I have found that blogging is doing just that. It’s bright and shiny but then it’s moving on to something else bright and shiny.

I’ve met a lot of bloggers and I hope to meet some more. With that said, I dig comments. I don’t really worry about stalkers in my virtual world.

It’s the ones in the real world that make me take pause.
